Viola player Mat Maneri, saxophonist Evan Parker and pianist Lucian Ban improvise on the intersection of chamber music and jazz. Spacious, amorphous, dreamy’ (All About Jazz).
‘It’s like Lester Young mixed with something insane, rooted in the past of an alternate universe’, is how American violinist Mat Maneri describes his album Sounding Tears, on which he improvises with British saxophonist Evan Parker and Romanian pianist Lucian Ban. Their ensemble playing has an intimate, yet challenging character, somewhere between chamber music and improv jazz.
Saxophone innovator Evan Parker sounds surprisingly different in this setting, with lines evoking bebop. Maneri leads the music in unexpected directions with his recognizable viola playing, in which he marries the distinct worlds of jazz and microtonal music. With this project he continues his collaborative relationship with pianist Ban, who provided a couple of compositions for Sounding Tears.
